Based on the survival story of five street sleepers, Prospects Theatre's latest production "Shamshuipo Lear" to be staged in September is a 100 per cent Hong Kong play imbued with local colour and sentiment.
The play is about street sleepers scattered around Hong Kong's slums and back alleys. They live on the streets and dream next to people's footsteps, eking out an existence of great anxiety and hopelessness. Hong Kong has been criticised for having a severe wealth gap problem and street sleepers are the poorest of the poor. They are looked down on and ignored by society. Like Shakespeare's King Lear, they are in a desperate situation.
The production is directed by Hardy Tsoi. Tsoi and Fung Kin-sun are the playwrights. Performing in the show will be Tu Sze-chung, Yu Sai-tang, Tang Wing-wai, Edmond Kok, Chan Wai-sin, Pansy Wong, Alok Jain, Johnxon Tai, Yau Ka-hei, Tsang Ling-wai, Cheung Chun-chung and Yiu Wan-heung.
Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, "Shamshuipo Lear" (in Cantonese) by Prospects Theatre will be staged at 8pm on September 11 and 12 (Friday and Saturday), and 3pm on September 12 and 13 (Saturday and Sunday), at the Theatre of Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre.
