Territory-wide campaign to promote pedestrian safety

     Police concluded a one-week territory-wide pedestrian safety campaign yesterday (July 14). Through stringent enforcement actions, pedestrians, in particular the elderly, were reminded of the importance of road safety.
 
     A total of 140 verbal warnings and 1 327 summonses were issued to pedestrians failing to comply with road safety regulations during the campaign conducted from July 8 to 14.
 
     During the period, Police issued 1 117 summonses for failing to comply with a light signal on a light signal crossing, 93 summonses for crossing the road within 15 metres of a footbridge/pedestrian subway other than by means of the footbridge/pedestrian subway, and 65 summonses for crossing the road within 15 metres of a light signal crossing other than by means of the light signal crossing.
 
     "Pedestrians are reminded to take care and to cross the road safely.  Those who fail to comply with the law may be liable to a maximum fine of $2,000," a Police spokesman said.
