The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:
The spokesperson for the Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service (BTS) said today (June 24) that the turnout at blood donation venues has been noticeably low recently due to the traditional examination period for local students and the recent inclement weather. As a result, the blood inventories of the BTS have depleted to their current low with the B positive and O positive blood types requiring urgent stock replenishment. The BTS appeals to members of the public for immediate blood donation to avoid disruptions of blood supply and clinical transfusion treatment to patients.
The daily turnout for blood donation has been only around 800 in recent weeks, which is well below the daily target of 1,100 people. The daily collection has not been able to meet the hospitals' demand. The BTS appeals to donors who are due for a donation or citizens who have never given blood to give a helping hand so that the blood stock level can return to normal as soon as possible.
For the locations and service hours of donor centres, please call 2710 1234 or visit the BTS website www.ha.org.hk/rcbts.
