Award-winning Hong Kong oboist Bobby Cheng to give recital in July

     Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the award-winning oboist Bobby Cheng will perform a recital in July as part of the "Our Music Talent Series". The young oboist will show his superb skills by playing a variety of compositions.

     The programme will feature Couperin's "Quatrième Concert (from 'Concerts Royaux')", Schumann's "Three Romances, Op. 94", Pasculli's "Gran Concerto on Themes from Verdi's 'I Vespri Siciliani'" and Doráti's "Duo Concertante for Oboe and Piano".

     Born in Hong Kong, Bobby Cheng is a talented young oboist who started learning the oboe at the age of eight under the tutelage of Yiu Song-lam. He has since received award-winning recognition worldwide. Cheng attained his Bachelor of Music (Hons) degree at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) in 2014 with first-class honours. He is currently studying for a Master of Music degree at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et Danse de Lyon (France), in the class of Jean-Louis Capezzali and Jérôme Guichard.

     Cheng has participated in numerous local and international music competitions. His awards include First Prize at the Fifth Giuseppe Ferlendis International Oboe Competition, Italy (2012); First Prize in the Wind Concerto Competition at the Aspen Music Festival and School, the United States (2012); Second Prize at the 41st International Double Reed Society Oboe Competition, the United States (2012); Second Prize at the Ninth Beijing Conservatory of Music Winds/Chamber Competition (Oboe Category), China (2011); First Prize at the First International Asian Double Reed Association Oboe Competition, Thailand (2011); and Third Prize in the Winds Group (Open Class) of the Hong Kong Youth Musician of the Year (2010).

     Cheng has performed in master classes for artists alongside musicians including François Leleux, Thomas Indermühle and Maurice Bourgue. He has also attended lessons with Jacques Tys and David Walter. Cheng was a member of the Asian Youth Orchestra from 2009 to 2010 and also attended the Aspen Music Festival and School in 2012, supported by a full scholarship from the Asian Cultural Council.

     The "Our Music Talents Series: Oboe Recital by Bobby Cheng" will be staged at 8pm, July 4 (Saturday) at the Theatre, Hong Kong City Hall. Tickets priced at $120 and $160 are now available at URBTIX. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients are available on a first-come, first-served basis).
