Response by Chief Executive's Office
************************************

Media reports today (May 21) quoted the President of the Hong Kong Baptist University Students' Union as saying that the Chief Executive, Mr C Y Leung, as the Chancellor of The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has intervened in the appointment of the former Dean of the Faculty of Law, Professor Johannes Chan Man-mun, as the Vice-President. A spokesman for the Chief Executive's Office said that a statement had been issued earlier to refute the allegation which is totally untrue and fabricated while HKU had also clarified such claim repeatedly and openly.

The spokesman stressed that anyone should not mislead the society and manipulate public opinion to exert pressure and sabotage the appointment systems so as to achieve one's political or other aims. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government shall continue to uphold the principle of meritocracy and make appointments in accordance with the ordinances of respective institutions.
