Local dance company Unlock Dancing Plaza will stage a new production entitled "Boy Story . Reborn" in May, featuring young men of two generations coming together not only to revive a classic, but also to subvert the present moment.
Hong Kong choreographer Yuri Ng, known for his quirky genius, was awarded the Prix d'Auteur at the Rencontres chorgraphiques internationales de Seine-Saint-Denis (Bagnolet) in France for his "Boy Story" in 1996. Ingeniously crafted for six male dancers, it explores the male's anxiety towards self-positioning, integrated with the local community's reservations about the handover of Hong Kong in the run-up to 1997. The work portrays the boys' romantic yet persistent pursuit of dreams in the city through body movement and posture.
Nineteen years later, the original cast from Malaysia and Taiwan with Ong Yong Lock, the artistic director of Unlock Dancing Plaza, and the dancers from the premiere, are reunited to revive the classic. The reunion has given rise to a new combination, "Boy Story . Reborn", to subvert the pretty impression of "Boy Story" and to depict the fearless and aggressive renewal of life through the new generation.
The cast of "Boy Story" comprises Jay Jen Loo, Ong Yong Lock, Yap Choong Boon, Wong Thien Pau, Lim Chee Keat and Chou Shu Yi. Ong also choreographed "Boy Story Reborn", while James Yau, Joseph Lee, Lai Tak-wai, Andy Lee and Skinny Ng will perform in the new piece.
"Boy Story . Reborn" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. It will be staged at 8pm on May 22 and 23 (Friday and Saturday) at the Theatre of the Sheung Wan Civic Centre. Tickets priced at $160 and $200 are now available at URBTIX. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis). A maximum discount of 20 per cent is offered for the group booking package. Meet-the-artist sessions will be held after the first performance.
