Early this year, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress designated December 13 as the Nanjing Massacre National Memorial Day to commemorate victims who died in the Nanjing Massacre and those who were killed during the Japanese invasion. The Memorial Day also expresses the resolve of the Chinese people in safeguarding national sovereignty, territorial integrity and world peace.
On December 13, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government will hold a Ceremony on the Nanjing Massacre National Memorial Day at the Redoubt Courtyard, Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence. The Chief Executive, a Judiciary representative, senior government officials, members of the Legislative Council, members of the Executive Council, representatives of war veteran groups and members of the community will attend. The ceremony will include playing of the national anthem, silence in mourning, wreath laying and bowing.
The Government will also stage an exhibition on the Nanjing Massacre from December 13 to January 7, 2015, at the Museum of Coastal Defence. The same exhibition will also be held from December 13 to 31 at the Tsuen Wan Town Hall, Central Government Offices at Tamar, Revenue Tower and Sha Tin Government Offices, and from December 17 till end of the month at Cheung Sha Wan Government Offices. Memorial books will be placed at the exhibition venues for visitors to sign to express condolences to the victims.
To encourage community participation in the memorial activity, the Museum of Coastal Defence will be free for admission on the Memorial Day on December 13.
