Customs smashes two smartphone smuggling cases at Lok Ma Chau Control Point (with photos)

     Hong Kong Customs smashed two suspected smuggling cases at Lok Ma Chau Control Point earlier and seized a total of 1 608 smartphones worth about $1.7 million. The smartphones were concealed in the altered axles and cross members of the trailer of two outgoing trucks. The two male drivers, aged 50 and 48, were arrested and the two trailers were seized.

     In the afternoon of November 26, Customs officers intercepted an outgoing truck with a 40-foot trailer and a 40-foot container for inspection. A total of 912 smartphones concealed in three altered axles were found after removing the wheels of the trailer.

     Later on the same day, another outgoing truck with a 40-foot trailer and an empty 20-foot container was intercepted for examination. After removing the container from the trailer, Customs officers discovered 696 smartphones concealed in the false compartments in the middle and the rear cross members of the trailer.

     The two drivers were arrested. They are on bail pending further investigation.

     Under the Import and Export Ordinance, the maximum penalty for attempting to import or export unmanifested cargo is a fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
