According to the results of the 2013 Annual Survey of Economic Activities - Industrial Sector released today (November 28) by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD), the manufacturing sector's total receipts (comprising sales and other receipts) amounted to $194.3 billion in 2013, representing a decrease of 10.2% over 2012; on a per establishment basis, total receipts decreased by 7.5% compared with 2012 to $20.8 million in 2013.
Operating expenses and compensation of employees of the manufacturing sector altogether amounted to $178.2 billion in 2013, representing a decrease of 10.7% over 2012; on a per establishment basis, they decreased by 8.1% compared with 2012 to $19.0 million in 2013.
Gross surplus of the manufacturing sector, which is equal to total receipts less operating expenses and compensation of employees, decreased by 4.1% over 2012 to $16.1 billion in 2013; on a per establishment basis, gross surplus decreased by 1.3% over 2012 to $1.7 million in 2013. Gross surplus accounted for 8.3% of total receipts in 2013, up by 0.5 percentage point compared with 2012.
Value added of the manufacturing sector, which is a measure of its contribution to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product, increased by 0.9% over 2012 to $35.4 billion in 2013; on a per establishment basis, the value added was $3.8 million in 2013, which increased by 3.9% over 2012.
The manufacturing sector comprised about 9 400 establishments and engaged about 102 000 persons, or an average of 10.9 persons per establishment, in 2013.
Within the manufacturing sector, the four largest industry groupings in terms of value added in 2013 were (1) food, beverages and tobacco industry; (2) metal products, machinery and equipment industry; (3) paper products, printing and reproduction of recorded media industry; and (4) chemicals, rubber, plastics and non-metallic mineral products industry. They together accounted for 80.3% of the value added of the manufacturing sector.
In the food, beverages and tobacco industry, total receipts amounted to $38.6 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $33.9 billion in 2013. Gross surplus amounted to 4.7 billion in 2013, accounting for 12.1% of total receipts in 2013. Value added increased by 6.4% over 2012 to $10.0 billion.
In the metal products, machinery and equipment industry, total receipts amounted to $76.6 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $72.4 billion in 2013. Gross surplus decreased from $4.6 billion in 2012 to $4.2 billion in 2013, accounting for 5.5% of total receipts in 2013. Value added decreased by 3.8% compared with 2012 to $8.4 billion.
In the paper products, printing and reproduction of recorded media industry, total receipts amounted to $16.9 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $15.1 billion in 2013. Gross surplus decreased from $2.3 billion in 2012 to $1.7 billion in 2013, accounting for 10.3% of total receipts in 2013. Value added decreased by 3.0% compared with 2012 to $5.2 billion.
In the chemicals, rubber, plastics and non-metallic mineral products industry, total receipts amounted to $23.9 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $21.1 billion in 2013. Gross surplus increased from $2.3 billion in 2012 to $2.8 billion in 2013, accounting for 11.9% of total receipts in 2013. Value added increased by 14.1% over 2012 to $4.9 billion.
In addition to manufacturing establishments, the industrial sector also includes establishments engaged in mining and quarrying; electricity and gas supply; and sewerage, waste management and remediation activities. Selected statistics for the industrial sector (except mining and quarrying), with breakdowns by major industry grouping, are shown in the attached table.
