The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam, expressed her regret over the disorder at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) as a result of protest by student organisations when she attended a seminar organised by HKU Convocation at HKU's Rayson Huang Theatre yesterday evening (June 19).
A spokesperson for the Chief Secretary for Administration's Office pointed out that while the Chief Secretary respected students' freedom of speech, she hoped that the students could also respect the organiser, speaker and participants of the event, and the safety of the participants (including security officers) should be observed.
The spokesperson also pointed out that the Chief Secretary also encountered protests by more radical student organisations when attending events in other higher education institutions in the past few months. Although the institutions had done their best to maintain order, they could not stop the disorderly situation from occurring. The Chief Secretary expressed concern over the situation.
The spokesperson said, "We hope that people can respect each other and express views in a peaceful and orderly manner."
