Oral history theatre project to collect memories of elderly people in Eastern District
************************************************************

     Co-organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), performing arts groups and district organisations, the Community Oral History Theatre Project has received a positive response over the past few years. This year, the Project is being extended to include Eastern District, where the personal experiences and precious memories of local elderly people will be sought and collected. At the end of the project the elderly participants will recount their own stories on stage.

     The Project is being carried out in phases, the first being an oral history theatre performance and sharing session. A group of elderly actors from Kwun Tong have been invited to perform an excerpt titled "The People, the Story and the Memory" (in Cantonese) at 3pm on July 22 (Tuesday) in the Community Hall, 3/F, Causeway Bay Community Centre. Senior citizens from Eastern District will be recruited at the event to join the Project.

     Free admission tickets are available from June 23 at the following venues:

* Hong Kong Society for the Aged Eastern District Elderly Community Centre (G/F, Phase 2, Provident Centre, 53 Wharf Road, North Point);
* Enquiry Counter, Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre;
* Martha Baker Social Centre for the Elderly, Neighbourhood Advice-Action Council (G/F, Sheung Yat House, Upper Ngau Tau Kok Eastate, Kwun Tong); and
* Enquiry Counters at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre and Hong Kong City Hall Low Block.
(There is a limit of four tickets per person. Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis with free seating.)

     Enrolled participants will join different workshops and performances in phases including drama training, script formation, exchanges and rehearsals as well as the public performance finale. Elderly people who are interested in participating in the Community Oral History Theatre Project ¡ª Eastern District should complete and return the application forms on site after the demonstration performance and sharing session. Audition interviews may be arranged if the number of applications exceeds the quota.

     With widespread support, the Community Oral History Theatre Project has been run in Sham Shui Po, Kwun Tong and is now in Islands District (Tai O). The Project's success has prompted the LCSD to extend it to Eastern District. The LCSD is co-organising the Community Oral History Theatre Project - Eastern District together with Chung Ying Theatre Company, the Hong Kong Society for the Aged and the Neighbourhood Advice-Action Council. The Project aims to encourage the elderly to be active in arts and cultural activities and, through their performances, to enhance the younger generation's understanding of how previous generations grew up and encourage them to reflect on their own lives.
