A Government spokesman today (June 14) said that the violence occurred outside the Legislative Council (LegCo) Complex last night was totally unacceptable and strongly condemned the violent acts of the protesters.
"Protesters resorted to violent acts to try gain access into the LegCo Complex, causing serious damages to the Complex. They seized and pushed the mills barriers, charging their way into the Complex and smashing the glass-panels. The door of an emergency exit was completely broken, and the building facade was damaged. The incident interfered with the meetings of the LegCo committees. Six security officers and four Police officers were injured while carrying out the duties. The protesters' violent acts posed serious threat to all those at the scene, including Legislative Councillors, security officers and Police officers, and seriously undermined public order and public peace. We must strongly condemn their actions."
The spokesman stressed, "Hong Kong is a law-abiding society. We cannot tolerate any violence. The Police are now conducting a full investigation into the incident and the persons involved will be held criminally responsible."
The spokesman reiterated that the Government respects the people's right to express their views, opinions and the freedom of assembly. However, the public should observe the law and should not undermine the public order when expressing their views.
