The Commissioner for Labour, Mr Donald Tong, visited the Labour Department's pilot thematic job expo today (March 5), which is titled "Building a Multi-culture Workplace", and spoke to ethnic minority students and job seekers to learn more about their employment needs.
A total of 94 organisations are participating in the Mong Kok Job Expo, which is being held today and tomorrow, with 43 organisations setting up counters and conducting on-the-spot recruitment each day. Seven training organisations and one support service centre for ethnic minorities have also joined the expo. The recruiting organisations mainly come from the catering, retail, transport and property management industries, and are offering about 5 700 vacancies for job seekers of diverse cultural backgrounds.
The vacancies offered cover a wide variety of positions such as telemarketer, baggage handler, technician, beautician, customer services executive, salesperson, cashier, shop assistant, cook, waiter/waitress, storekeeper, security guard, driver, cleaner and others.
While selecting the organisations to participate in the job expo, the Labour Department accorded priority to those which are willing to hire the ethnic minorities, and are able to offer suitable vacancies for them. In this connection, the language competence requirement for some vacancies offered by the participating organisations is relatively less demanding. Some organisations are also willing to make flexible arrangement in the duties so that ethnic minorities who are not able to read or write in Chinese can also apply for the jobs.
Job seekers may apply for jobs on-the-spot and obtain information on training courses and support services for ethnic minorities. Exhibition materials to introduce the Labour Department's services are displayed in a mini-exhibition on site. Instantaneous translation services for Hindi, Urdu and Nepalese speakers have also been arranged.
Around 84 per cent of the vacancies are for full-time jobs. Most vacancies offer monthly salaries ranging from $8,000 to $14,000. Over 97 per cent of the vacancies require a Secondary Six education level or below. Around 64 per cent are open to job seekers who may lack relevant experience.
Job seekers can submit applications on the spot and may be selected for on-site interviews. They can also register for employment services and make enquiries about applying for the Work Incentive Transport Subsidy at the Labour Department's counter.
A total of 1 870 people attended today's event. The Expo will continue tomorrow at MacPherson Stadium, 1/F, 38 Nelson Street, Mong Kok, Kowloon which is accessible via MTR Mong Kok Station Exit E2.
