The Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department is now inviting applications for the 2014 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp. The event is a well-received annual summer programme that offers young musicians an opportunity to receive intensive orchestral, band and choral training from renowned musicians from Europe, America and Asia in a scenic campsite setting.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to share experiences with other budding musicians and gain inspiration, as well as take part in sports and leisure activities, and will later perform in two concerts to be held in July to showcase their achievements.
The 2014 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp will be held from July 13 to 19 (Camp A) and from July 20 to 26 (Camp B) at the Sai Kung Outdoor Recreation Centre. Qualified local young musicians aged 9 to 25 are welcome to apply. The fee is $1,144 per person for the seven-day and six-night music camps.
Young musicians from overseas and the Mainland are also welcome to join the music camps but with an extra day added, so that the dates will run from July 13 to 20 (Camp A) and from July 20 to 27 (Camp B). The fee for overseas and Mainland campers is $1,700 per person for the eight-day and seven-night music camps. To encourage international music exchanges, Parsons Music, the event's sponsor this year, will offer scholarships for overseas and Mainland young musicians who have attained excellent musical standards to join the camps.
Young musicians may choose to join one of the music groups, which comprise Children's Choir, Junior String Orchestra and Chinese Orchestra in Camp A and Junior Chinese Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Band in Camp B.
Renowned musicians participating in this year's training programme include the Artistic Director of Anima, an internationally recognised youth choral organisation serving the Chicago metropolitan area, Ms Emily Ellsworth; violinist of the Akron Symphony in Ohio, the Lincoln Symphony in Nebraska and the Greater Newburgh Symphony in New York Mr Lu Huadong; the Principal Conductor of the Shenyang Conservatory's Youth Chinese Orchestra, Mr Sun Peng, who was the champion of the 2011 Hong Kong International Conducting Competition for Chinese Music and has won the Best Interpretation of Works of Hong Kong Award; Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Taiwan University of Arts and the Chinese Culture University Ms Chen Chun-hsin; the conductor of the Baden-Wrttemberg Youth Wind Ensemble in Germany and the Zug Wind Orchestra in Switzerland, Mr Felix Hauswirth; and the Music Director of the Northwest Symphony Orchestra and the Oregon East Symphony and Chorale, Dr Anthony Spain, who was a Grammy nominee in vocal jazz performance.
In addition to learning music, campers can also participate in various recreational activities such as swimming, ball games, archery, sports climbing and karaoke at the campsite.
A day camp, titled "A Wonderful Music Day Tour" and costing $60 per person per day, will also be available every Monday to Friday from July 14 to 25 for organisations, families and other groups of individuals to share in delightful music activities such as visiting the camp choir, band and orchestra rehearsals as well as attending mini-concerts and taking part in music games. Day camp participants will also be able to use various recreational facilities available in the camp. A concessionary rate of $44 per person for children, full-time students, senior citizens aged 60 and above and people with disabilities is also available.
