Hong Kong Chiuchow Music Ensemble to open Lingnan Music Series

     The Hong Kong Chiuchow Music Ensemble will stage two concerts in February to open the Lingnan Music Series presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

     The Hong Kong Chiuchow Music Ensemble was formed in the 1970s. The ensemble was a regular performing group in the outdoor entertainment programmes of the former Hong Kong Urban Council. Its members are local enthusiasts in Chaozhou music, most of whom have 20 to 30 years of performing experience. These veterans are now serving as coaches or music teachers to help groom younger musicians. Apart from performing as an accompanying ensemble for Chaozhou opera troupes in Hong Kong, the ensemble has also toured Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. The musicians are in close contact with famous virtuosi in Chaozhou and Shantou, practising with them and actively promoting cultural exchange in a bid to keep the art form thriving.

     The Hong Kong Chiuchow Music Ensemble will perform two concerts: "A Concert of Chaozhou Gongs and Drums Da luogu" and "A Concert of Chaozhou Xianshi Ensemble Music".

     "A Concert of Chaozhou Gongs and Drums Da luogu" will be staged at 8pm on February 16 (Sunday) at the Theatre of the Yau Ma Tei Theatre. The programme will include Chaozhou gongs and drums da luogu in "Celebrating the Chinese New Year", Chaozhou gongs and drums xiao luogu in "Lions Playing with a Ball", suona music in "Butterflies among Flowers", hengdi music in "Going Up the Mansion", Chaozhou operatic song singing and more. Those performing at the concert will include Lau Fok-kwong, Li Tung-yat, Wong Pui-chu, Lo Shau-chun, Hui Din-fung, Wong Shek-yuk, Tang Siu-cheong, Hui Chun-lit, Chan Yim-pau, Hui Hon-kei, Li Ying-wai, Wong Bing-wah, Wong Shek-tong, Lee Chun-hau and more. Vocalists to be invited to perform include Fong Wah, Lau Sik-chun, Lam Hei-chu and Ng Pui-ling.

     "A Concert of Chaozhou Xianshi Ensemble Music" will be staged at 8pm on February 28 (Friday) at the Theatre of the Yau Ma Tei Theatre. The programme will include the Chaozhou music ensemble composition "Fish Hawks Dabbling in the Water", Xianshi ensemble music in "Two Heroes Crossing the River", the music piece "As the Waves Wash the Sand", Chaozhou operatic song singing and more. Apart from the musicians from the ensemble, vocalists to be invited to perform include Lee Yuen-ching, Yeung Mei-wah and Lee Ching-lan.

     Tickets priced at $120 and $160 are now available at all URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by telephone credit card booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).
