Police concluded a one-week territory-wide pedestrian safety campaign yesterday (January 21). Through education, publicity and stringent enforcement actions, pedestrians, in particular the elderly, were reminded of the importance of road safety.
A total of 389 verbal warnings and 1 469 summonses were issued to pedestrians failing to comply with road safety regulations during the campaign conducted from January 15 to 21.
During the period, Police issued 1 107 summonses for failing to comply with a light signal on a light signal crossing, 164 summonses for crossing the road within 15 metres of a footbridge/pedestrian subway other than by means of the footbridge/pedestrian subway, and 48 summonses for climbing over/through kerbside fence/central reservation on a carriageway.
Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams had distributed about 10 000 publicity leaflets at 265 locations across the territory and appealed to the public to comply with road safety regulations.
"Pedestrians are reminded to take care and to cross the road safely. Those who fail to comply with the law may be liable to a maximum fine of $2,000," a Police spokesman said.
