The general and roadside monitoring stations of Environmental Protection Department have recorded higher than normal Air Pollution Index (API). As at 4pm today (December 28), the API at Yuen Long, Kwun Tong and Tap Mun were 115, 107 and 104 respectively. The roadside stations at Causeway Bay and Central also recorded 134 and 129 respectively.
The elevated pollution level is due to the high level of respirable suspended particulates. The territories are affected by a dry continental air stream with relatively high background pollution. The light wind in the urban areas hinders the effective dispersion of the pollutants at street level leading to higher than normal level of nitrogen dioxide.
According to the Hong Kong Observatory, the winter monsoon will continue to affect southern China in the next few days so it is expected that the pollution situation would persist for a while.
With an API in the very high range, persons with existing heart or respiratory illnesses are advised to reduce physical exertion and outdoor activities. They are also advised to seek advice from a medical doctor before participating in sport activities and take more breaks during the activities.
