The Labour Department (LD) today (December 27) reminded employment agencies to comply with the law or they may face prosecution.
The reminder came after a recent court case in which an employment agency and its director were convicted of operating an employment agency without a valid licence at Tuen Mun Magistrates' Courts earlier.
Pacific Management Services Limited and its director were each fined $8,000 for unlicensed operation of an employment agency and assisting in the management of the agency concerned respectively. Pacific Management Services Limited was also ordered to pay compensation of $7,125 to the job seeker concerned by the court.
The Employment Agencies Administration (EAA) of the LD received a complaint of overcharging from a foreign domestic helper against the employment agency concerned in July this year. Investigation revealed that the said agency operated without a licence and collected payment from the complainant.
For enquiries or complaints against unlicensed operations or overcharging of commissions by employment agencies, please call the EAA at 2852 3535 or visit its office on 12/F, Harbour Building, 38 Pier Road, Central, Hong Kong.
