Key statistics on operating characteristics of the import/export, wholesale and retail trades, and accommodation and food services sectors in 2012

     According to the results of the 2012 Annual Survey of Economic Activities - Import/Export, Wholesale and Retail Trades, and Accommodation and Food Services Sectors released today (November 29) by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD), the import/export, wholesale and retail trades, and accommodation and food services sectors' total receipts (i.e. sales and other receipts) amounted to $4,901.6 billion in 2012, representing an increase of 1.9% over 2011; on a per establishment basis, total receipts increased by 6.6% compared with 2011 to $29.5 million in 2012.

     Operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees of the sectors altogether amounted to $4,535.9 billion in 2012, representing an increase of 2.1% over 2011; on a per establishment basis, they increased by 6.9% compared with 2011 to $27.3 million in 2012.

     Gross surplus of the sectors, which is equal to total receipts less operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees, decreased by 0.8% over 2011 to $365.7 billion in 2012; on a per establishment basis, gross surplus increased from $2.1 million in 2011 to $2.2 million in 2012.  Gross surplus accounted for 7.5% of total receipts in 2012, which decreased by 0.2 percentage point compared with 2011.

     Value added of the sectors, which is a measure of their total contribution to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product, increased by 2.5% over 2011 to $596.9 billion in 2012; on a per establishment basis, the value added was $3.6 million in 2012, which increased by 7.3% over 2011.

     According to the survey results, it was estimated that the sectors comprised some 166 300 establishments and engaged about 1 137 900 persons, or an average of 6.8 persons per establishment, in 2012.

     In the import/export trade, total receipts amounted to $3,914.0 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $3,634.6 billion in 2012.  Gross surplus decreased from $288.9 billion in 2011 to $279.4 billion in 2012, accounting for 7.1% of total receipts in 2012.  Value added decreased by 0.1% over 2011 to $418.7 billion.

     In the wholesale trade, total receipts amounted to $315.2 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $307.9 billion in 2012.  Gross surplus decreased from $7.6 billion in 2011 to $7.2 billion in 2012, accounting for 2.3% of total receipts in 2012.  Value added increased by 8.3% over 2011 to $19.8 billion.

     In the retail trade, total receipts amounted to $515.0 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $462.4 billion in 2012.  Gross surplus increased from $48.9 billion in 2011 to $52.7 billion in 2012, accounting for 10.2% of total receipts in 2012.  Value added increased by 8.9% over 2011 to $88.8 billion.

     In the accommodation services sector which covered hotels, guesthouses, boarding houses and other establishments providing short term accommodation, total receipts amounted to $40.8 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $23.9 billion in 2012.  Gross surplus increased from $15.1 billion in 2011 to $16.9 billion in 2012, accounting for 41.4% of total receipts in 2012.  Value added increased by 11.0% over 2011 to $27.5 billion.

     In the food services sector which mainly covered restaurants, total receipts amounted to $116.7 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $107.1 billion in 2012.  Gross surplus increased from $8.2 billion in 2011 to $9.6 billion in 2012, accounting for 8.2% of total receipts in 2012.  Value added increased by 8.7% over 2011 to $42.1 billion.
