The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (October 15) the October 2013 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).
Apart from providing up-to-date statistics, this issue also contains two feature articles entitled "Socio-economic Characteristics and Consumption Expenditure of Hong Kong Residents Making Personal Travel to the Mainland of China, 2012" and "The Asset Management Industry in Hong Kong".
"Socio-economic Characteristics and Consumption Expenditure of Hong Kong Residents Making Personal Travel to the Mainland of China, 2012"
In 2012, Hong Kong residents made 73.2 million person-trips to the mainland of China (the Mainland) for business and personal purposes. Of these trips, business travel accounted for 39% while personal travel constituted 61% (44.7 million).
Analysed by sex among Hong Kong residents making personal travel to the Mainland, the proportion of personal trips made by males (54%) was higher. Analysed by age, the highest proportion of personal trips was made by residents in the age group of 50 to 59 (25%). Analysed by economic activity status, 24.4 million person-trips were made by employed persons.
In 2012, total consumption expenditure of Hong Kong residents making personal travel to the Mainland amounted to $35.7 billion. The average expenditure per person-trip was around $800. For overnight trips of personal travel to the Mainland, the average expenditure per person-trip was around $1,010, while that for same-day trips was around $320.

"The Asset Management Industry in Hong Kong"
Hong Kong is one of the most vibrant international financial centres in the world and has strength in managing investments in the Asia Pacific region. The asset management industry has developed rapidly in Hong Kong in recent years. This feature article presents the operating characteristics and economic contribution of this industry between 2007 and 2011. It also briefly highlights the recent quarterly business performance of this industry.
