The path to adulthood is full of confusion and challenges with many family, work and social issues to be overcome. How can teenagers grow up to becoming responsible and honest people in such a complex world? In a bid to guide young people to appreciate the path of growth through reading, various writers will share their personal growing experiences with the aim of encouraging teenagers to better understand and care more about society.
Organised by the Hong Kong Public Libraries (HKPL) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, this year's "Meet-the-Authors" talks have been held at various public libraries since March. The remaining eleven talks will be held from September to November.
Under the theme "Walking on the Path of Growth", the talks are divided into three series, namely, "The Soul and Me: Growth in Realising Missions and Aspirations", "The Society and Me: Growth in Caring" and "The World and Me: Growth in Holding Truth and Principles". The talks will be conducted in Cantonese and admission is free. "Meet-the-Authors 2013" is also one of the events under the "Hip Hong Kong" theme of the "Hong Kong: Our Home" Campaign.
Eleven authors will speak at the talks, namely the professional writers Quenby, Mr Wong King-tin and Mr Koo Wing-shun; secondary school teachers Mr Tsoi Wai-chuen and Ms Yau Yan-ni; mass media workers Mr Au Ka-lun and Mr Yip Koon-lam; news reporter Ms Cheung Chui-yung; the editor of Hong Kong Economic Times Ms Tse Ngo-sheung; the Chairman of Hong Kong Liberal Studies Teachers' Association Mr Hui Shing-yan and Lecturer at the Department of Applied Social Sciences of Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Mr Fung Yat-chung.
In the series titled "The Soul and Me: Growth in Realising Missions and Aspirations", authors will talk about growing up and encourage teenagers to search for their own direction. On September 14, Mr Wong King-tin will discuss his search for success as a writer and encourage young people to make their dreams come true; on November 9, Ms Yau Yan-ni will talk about the similarities between learning to ride a bike and mastering life skills; and on November 16 Quenby, who is well known as an author of teenagers' topics, will tell the audience about her sources of writing inspiration.
In the series titled "The Society and Me: Growth in Caring" starting on October 5, Mr Koo Wing-shun will talk about how to contribute to society through the Internet and Mr Yip Koon-lam will discuss the influence of slang on Internet on October 12. On October 19, Ms Tse Ngo-sheung will explore the political and social environment of Hong Kong, Mainland China and North Korea; and on October 26, Mr Hui Shing-yan will share with readers the importance and benefits of learning liberal studies.
How can young people receive information objectively and seek truth in today's confusing world? In the series titled "The World and Me: Growth in Holding Truth and Principles", beginning on September 7, Mr Tsoi Wai-chuen will talk about how to better understand the world and enrich life by travelling; on September 14, Mr Au Ka-lun will discuss "time travel" and the search for truth through reading; and on September 28, Ms Cheung Chui-yung will explore the possibility of another world and encourage young readers to think about their existing life style and social relationships. Finally, on November 2, Mr Fung Yat-chung will share his views on choice and freedom from his double career as a cook and a sociologist.
