April 2013 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics is now available
****************************************************

The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (April 15) the April 2013 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

In this issue, three feature articles entitled "The Four Key Industries and Other Selected Industries in the Hong Kong Economy", "The Import/Export, Wholesale and Retail Trades, and Accommodation and Food Services Sectors in Hong Kong" and "Cross-boundary Travel Survey 2011" are included.

"The Four Key Industries and Other Selected Industries in the Hong Kong Economy"

The Government has been actively pursuing economic development in order to keep up the competitive advantage of Hong Kong. The traditional four key industries in Hong Kong, including financial services, trading and logistics, tourism, and professional and producer services, have been the driving force of Hong Kong's economic growth, providing impetus to growth of other sectors and creating employment. Besides, selected emerging industries, including cultural and creative industries, medical services, education services, innovation and technology, testing and certification services, and environmental industries, have also been identified as enjoying advantages for further development.

Feature articles analysing the economic contribution and employment situation in respect of the four key industries and selected emerging industries in 2010 were published in the February and March 2012 issues of HKMDS respectively. This feature article is an updated version of the two feature articles published in 2012, with figures for 2011 incorporated.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the National Income Branch, C&SD (Tel.: 2116 5188).

"The Import/Export, Wholesale and Retail Trades, and Accommodation and Food Services Sectors in Hong Kong"

This feature article presents the principal operating characteristics of the import/export, wholesale and retail trades, and accommodation and food services sectors of Hong Kong in 2011, and analyses the business environment of the sectors, by making reference to some industry averages and analytical ratios derived from statistics on their operating characteristics. It also attempts to gauge the more recent business performance of the retail trade and food services sectors with reference to the results of related monthly and quarterly surveys in 2012.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the Distribution Services Statistics Section, C&SD (Tel.: 2802 1367).

"Cross-boundary Travel Survey 2011"

The socio-economic ties between Hong Kong, the mainland of China and Macau are growing stronger, leading to tremendous growth in cross-boundary travel over the years. This feature article briefly describes the characteristics of cross-boundary trips and trip makers, based on data obtained from the Cross-boundary Travel Survey conducted by the Planning Department during October to November 2011.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the Cross-boundary Infrastructure and Development Section, Planning Department (Tel.: 2231 4707).

Published in bilingual form, the HKMDS is a compact volume of official statistics containing about 140 tables. It collects up-to-date statistical series on various aspects of the social and economic situation of Hong Kong. Topics include population; labour; external trade; national income and Balance of Payments; prices; business performance; energy; housing and property; Government accounts, finance and insurance; and transport, communications and tourism. For selected key statistical items, over 20 charts depicting the annual trend in the past decade and quarterly or monthly trend in the recent two years are also available. Users can download the Digest free of charge at the website of C&SD (www.censtatd.gov.hk/hkstat/sub/sp140.jsp?productCode=B1010002).

Enquiries about the contents of the Digest can be directed to the General Statistics Section of C&SD (Tel.: 2582 4738).
