The Commissioner of Police, Mr Tsang Wai-hung, has led a four-member delegation to visit the New Zealand Police (NZP) between February 17 and 21. As a highlight of the visit, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed on February 19 between the two Forces to enhance bilateral co-operation in combating transnational crimes and capability building.
The MOU, signed by Mr Tsang and the Commissioner of NZP, Mr Peter Marshall, at the National Police Headquarters in Wellington, complements existing co-operation between Hong Kong and New Zealand police. It sets out the framework in tackling transnational crimes and also bolsters the partnership in capability building and professional development.
At the signing ceremony, Mr Tsang emphasised that the two Forces share the same values and the determination to deter transnational crimes. Building on the established INTERPOL channel of co-operation, the two Forces will continue to seek further development opportunities and are committed to meeting future challenges.
The delegation later proceeded to Christchurch to study the best practices in emergency response adopted during the major earthquake hitting the city in February 2011. During their stay in Wellington, the delegation also visited the command and control centre, police college and maritime police of NZP.
The Hong Kong delegation will return to Hong Kong on February 21.
