The Government today (January 31) announced that the Chief Executive has appointed Mr Cheng Yan-kee as Chairman of the Council of the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) with effect from January 31, 2013 to December 31, 2015.
The Secretary for Education, Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, welcomed Mr Cheng's appointment.
"Mr Cheng is devoted to public service and has in particular rendered significant contributions to the higher education sector. Mr Cheng is an experienced member of the HKBU Council, and has been serving as its Deputy Chairman since 2007. He is well versed in the policy and governance of HKBU as well as the higher education sector. I am confident that HKBU will continue to scale new heights with Mr Cheng at the helm," Mr Ng said.
Mr Ng also paid tribute to Mr Wilfred Wong Ying-wai, the outgoing Chairman of the HKBU Council.
"Under Mr Wong's sterling leadership, HKBU has firmly established itself as a leading institution that pursues excellence, inspires innovation and promotes the whole person development of its students. The university has also made great strides in the development of various niche areas, receiving wide recognition for its achievements," he said.
