According to the results of the 2011 Annual Survey of Economic Activities - Import/Export, Wholesale and Retail Trades, and Accommodation and Food Services Sectors released today (November 30) by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD), the import/export, wholesale and retail trades, and accommodation and food services sectors' total receipts (i.e. sales and other receipts) amounted to $4,812.2 billion in 2011, representing an increase of 16.4% over 2010; on a per establishment basis, total receipts increased by 12.9% compared with 2010 to $27.6 million in 2011.
Operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees of the sectors altogether amounted to $4,443.6 billion in 2011, representing an increase of 15.3% over 2010; on a per establishment basis, they increased by 11.8% compared with 2010 to $25.5 million in 2011.
Gross surplus of the sectors, which is equal to total receipts less operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees, increased by 32.5% over 2010 to $368.6 billion in 2011; on a per establishment basis, gross surplus increased from $1.6 million in 2010 to $2.1 million in 2011. Gross surplus accounted for 7.7% of total receipts in 2011, which increased by 1.0 percentage point compared with 2010.
Value added of the sectors, which is a measure of its contribution to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product, increased by 19.9% over 2010 to $582.6 billion in 2011; on a per establishment basis, the value added was $3.3 million in 2011, which increased by 16.3% over 2010.
According to the survey results, it was estimated that the sectors comprised some 174 100 establishments and engaged about 1 122 400 persons, or an average of 6.4 persons per establishment, in 2011.
In the import/export trade, total receipts amounted to $3,901.2 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $3,612.3 billion in 2011. Gross surplus increased from $219.2 billion in 2010 to $288.9 billion in 2011, accounting for 7.4% of total receipts in 2011. Value added increased by 18.3% over 2010 to $419.3 billion.
In the wholesale trade, total receipts amounted to $298.8 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $291.2 billion in 2011. Gross surplus decreased from $8.1 billion in 2010 to $7.6 billion in 2011, accounting for 2.5% of total receipts in 2011. Value added increased by 3.9% over 2010 to $18.2 billion.
In the retail trade, total receipts amounted to $464.4 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $415.5 billion in 2011. Gross surplus increased from $32.6 billion in 2010 to $48.9 billion in 2011, accounting for 10.5% of total receipts in 2011. Value added increased by 36.2% over 2010 to $81.6 billion.
In the accommodation services sector which covered hotels, guesthouses, boarding houses and other establishments providing short term accommodation, total receipts amounted to $36.7 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $21.6 billion in 2011. Gross surplus increased from $10.8 billion in 2010 to $15.1 billion in 2011, accounting for 41.1% of total receipts in 2011. Value added increased by 30.7% over 2010 to $24.7 billion.
In the food services sector which mainly covered restaurants, total receipts amounted to $111.2 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $103.0 billion in 2011. Gross surplus increased from $7.6 billion in 2010 to $8.2 billion in 2011, accounting for 7.3% of total receipts in 2011. Value added increased by 10.1% over 2010 to $38.8 billion.
