Key statistics on business performance and operating characteristics of the transportation, storage and courier services sector in 2011

     According to the results of the 2011 Annual Survey of Economic Activities ¡ª Transportation, Storage and Courier Services Sector released today (November 8) by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD), the transportation, storage and courier services sector's total receipts (comprising business receipts and other income) amounted to $484.2 billion in 2011, representing a decrease of 0.5% compared with 2010; on a per establishment basis, total receipts increased by 5.2% over 2010 to $18.2 million in 2011.

     Operating expenses and compensation of employees of the sector altogether amounted to $432.2 billion in 2011, representing an increase of 5.1% over 2010; on a per establishment basis, they increased by 11.1% compared with 2010 to $16.2 million in 2011.

     Gross surplus of the sector, which is equal to total receipts less operating expenses and compensation of employees, decreased by 30.9% compared with 2010 to $52.0 billion in 2011; on a per establishment basis, gross surplus decreased from $2.68 million in 2010 to $1.96 million in 2011. Gross surplus accounted for 10.7% of total receipts in 2011, down by 4.7 percentage points compared with 2010.

     Value added of the sector, which is a measure of its contribution to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product, decreased by 14.6% compared with 2010 to $112.2 billion in 2011; on a per establishment basis, the value added was $4.2 million in 2011, which decreased by 9.7% compared with 2010.

     According to the survey results, it was estimated that the sector comprised some 26 600 establishments and engaged about 220 900 persons, or an average of 8.3 persons per establishment, in 2011.

     Within the transportation, storage and courier services sector, the four largest industry groupings in terms of value added in 2011 were (1) air transport and service activities incidental to air transportation, (2) land passenger transport, (3) other transportation support activities, and (4) service activities incidental to water transportation. They together accounted for 77.6% of the value added of the sector.

     In the air transport and service activities incidental to air transportation industry, total receipts amounted to $134.0 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $115.1 billion in 2011. Gross surplus decreased from $27.9 billion in 2010 to $18.9 billion in 2011, accounting for 14.1% of total receipts in 2011. Value added decreased by 13.2% compared with 2010 to $39.5 billion.

     In the land passenger transport industry, total receipts amounted to $41.5 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $29.6 billion in 2011. Gross surplus increased from $11.6 billion in 2010 to $11.9 billion in 2011, accounting for 28.7% of total receipts in 2011. Value added increased by 1.3% over 2010 to $23.2 billion.

     In the other transportation support activities industry which comprised mainly cargo forwarders and shipbrokers, total receipts amounted to $133.6 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $127.4 billion in 2011. Gross surplus decreased from $8.0 billion in 2010 to $6.3 billion in 2011, accounting for 4.7% of total receipts in 2011. Value added decreased by 5.4% compared with 2010 to $15.8 billion.

     In the service activities incidental to water transportation industry which included container terminal operators, mid-stream operators as well as operators engaged in container freight stations and vanning and devanning, total receipts amounted to $15.2 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $9.5 billion in 2011. Gross surplus decreased from $6.1 billion in 2010 to $5.7 billion in 2011, accounting for 37.2% of total receipts in 2011. Value added decreased by 5.8% compared with 2010 to $8.6 billion.
