The Director of Home Affairs, Mrs Pamela Tan, today (November 5) officiated at the opening ceremony of Yau Tong Community Hall, signifying the provision of more venues for the public to organise and participate in community activities in Kwun Tong.
Occupying an area of about 1,950 square metres, Yau Tong Community Hall is situated in a residential area and is adjacent to the MTR station and public transport interchanges in the district. Equipped with a multi-purpose hall with a seating capacity of some 450 people, the venue also has a function room to hold around 50 persons, a conference room and a meeting room, as well as a dressing room. In addition to featuring the penetration of natural lighting, the building also has barrier-free access facilities in place for public convenience.
Mrs Tan said the Home Affairs Department (HAD) has all along been attaching great importance to encouraging public participation in community activities with a view to fostering the spirit of a good neighbourhood. Community halls and centres play an important role in community building by providing venues for locals to organise various kinds of activities.
She said the HAD would continue to closely communicate with the District Council and co-ordinate different departments to actively respond to residents' views for building a caring community together.
Those also attending the opening ceremony today included the Chairman of the Kwun Tong District Council (KTDC), Mr Bunny Chan; the Deputy Director of Housing (Development and Construction), Ms Ada Fung; the District Officer (Kwun Tong), Mr Au Hing-yuen; and the Chairman of the District Facilities Management Committee (DFMC) under the KTDC, Mr Poon Chun-yuen.
Mrs Tan also expressed her gratitude to the KTDC and the DFMC for their active participation and invaluable advice during the construction of the community hall.
Yau Tong Community Hall, as part of the Yau Tong Estate Redevelopment Phase 4, was built by the Housing Department and is managed by the HAD. The community hall has been open to public booking since September this year.
With the completion of the Yau Tong Community Hall, there are nine community centres or halls for public use in Kwun Tong District. The others are Kwun Tong Community Centre, Lok Wah Estate Community Centre, Shun Lee Estate Community Centre, Lam Tin (East) Community Hall, Lam Tin (West) Estate Community Centre, Sau Mau Ping (Central) Estate Community Centre, Sai Tso Wan Neighbourhood Community Centre and Kai Yip Community Hall.
