Correctional officers stop inmate from self-harm
************************************************

Correctional officers stopped an inmate from harming himself in Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre today (October 25).

At about 10.30am, a correctional officer on duty found the 40-year-old male inmate sustained minor head injury after jumping from a 1-metre high wash basin in the centre hospital. The inmate was conscious at that time.

The officers immediately stopped him from further harming himself. After examination and treatment by a medical officer, the inmate was transferred to a government hospital for further treatment. The inmate will receive further assessment at Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre later.

A spokesman for the department said, "The department has been using all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The inmate was sentenced to three months' imprisonment for an offence of possessing apparatus for injection of dangerous drugs.
