Territory-wide campaign to promote school transport safety

     Police will launch a territory-wide publicity campaign to promote school transport safety from today (September 3) to September 7 to tie in with the start of the new school year.

     During the five-day publicity campaign, Police officers from Regional Road Safety Teams will distribute publicity leaflets to drivers of school buses and nanny vans, as well as teachers and parents to draw their attention to the transport safety of school children. Drivers of school buses and nanny vans will be reminded to use low gear and ancillary braking system when driving along downhill slopes. Police officers will also organise school visits to deliver talks on safety of travelling on school buses.

      Police statistics showed that in the first seven months of this year, there were 25 traffic accidents involving school buses or nanny vans during school trip with 128 persons aged 16 or below injured, compared to 21 accidents and 61 injuries in the same period in 2011.  
 
      According to the School Transport Safety Rules, drivers of school buses or nanny vans should take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of passengers.
