Hong Kong triumphs at China Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (with photo)

     Eight secondary students representing Hong Kong at the 2012 China Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (CGMO) in Guangzhou have won one gold medal, one silver medal and six bronze medals for Hong Kong.  

     A spokesman for the Education Bureau (EDB) said today (August 13), "Gold medallist Wong Sze-nga, a Secondary Four student from Diocesan Girls' School, achieved an outstanding performance and obtained the full score at the competition."
    
     The silver medallist was Secondary Six student Chan Helsa Heishun from Maryknoll Convent School (Secondary Section), while the six bronze medallists were Secondary Five student Yeung Yuk-wa from Shun Tak Fraternal Association Leung Kau Kui College, Secondary Four student Pun Tsam-kiu from St. Mary's Canossian College, Secondary Six student Leung Ka-pui from St. Paul's Co-educational College, Secondary Six student Suen Shui-yan from Madam Lau Kam Lung Secondary School of Miu Fat Buddhist Monastery, Secondary Four student Tam Chun-ying from Maryknoll Convent School (Secondary Section) and Secondary One student Cheng Wai-chung from Diocesan Girls' School.

     The students are trainees of the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education and the International Mathematical Olympiad Hong Kong Committee. They were selected to represent Hong Kong after taking part in three phases of a mathematics enrichment programme. Not only did they participate actively in the competition, but they also exchanged ideas and experience with their counterparts from the Mainland and other countries. The trip was funded by the EDB.
 
     The CGMO was held in Guangzhou from August 8 to 12. A total of 208 contestants participated in the competition with 40 teams from provinces, cities or regions in the Mainland and 12 teams from Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, the Philippines, Japan, Korea, Russia, the US and Taipei.

     The CGMO, organised by the China Mathematical Olympiad Committee, aims to promote mathematics education, foster friendly relationships with fellow mathematicians in the Mainland, and nurture mathematically gifted young people.
