China Philharmonic Orchestra (Hong Kong) music director and conductor Lim Kek-han will collaborate with soprano soloist Vivian Chan, baritone soloist Petrus Cheung, guest conductor Terry Leung and eight local choirs to perform in "The Yellow River Cantata Concert" in August.
The programme will consist of three compositions: Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture", Xian Xinghai's "Yellow River Cantata" and He Zhanhao and Chen Gang's "Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto". The orchestra is working hard to introduce Hong Kong audiences to Chinese music rearranged in modern style and has held numerous Chinese music concerts. In 1982, "The Yellow River Cantata Concert" took place at the Hong Kong City Hall and was strongly supported by the public. The new combination of performers and choirs in the coming concert will surely give audiences a sense of freshness.
Lim Kek-han graduated with distinction from the Royal Academy of Music in Amsterdam in 1951. He represented the Netherlands three times in other countries' music forums and has been the concertmaster of the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra. In 1958, Lim went to the USSR as a representative of China and performed with the best-known orchestras there. Lim has resided in Hong Kong since 1971 and is well known as a local conductor and a violinist.
Vivian Chan is a licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music and Trinity College London and has been one of the most active sopranos in Hong Kong in recent years. She gave her debut recital in 1995 at the Hong Kong City Hall and won critical acclaim from the music community. Since then, Chan has been frequently invited to perform around China. In 2005, she was invited to perform as a soloist in "The Yellow River Cantata Concert" in Beijing, accompanied by the Tianjin Symphony Orchestra. Chan is currently the Artistic Director of the Boheme Children's Choir. Her profile is listed in "A Dictionary of Chinese Musicians", published by the People's Press in March 1998.
Petrus Cheung was born in Hong Kong and trained in voice under the tutelage of the renowned tenor Yung Ho-do. An outstanding vocalist in Hong Kong, Cheung is endowed with a rich and powerful voice that exudes passion, making him an excellent interpreter of "Ode to the Yellow River". For the past few years, Cheung has appeared frequently with the Hong Kong Oratorio Society as a lead singer in god-praising cantatas and has made two CD recordings.
Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, "The Yellow River Cantata Concert" by the China Philharmonic Orchestra (Hong Kong) will be staged at 8pm on August 11 (Saturday) at the Auditorium, Tsuen Wan Town Hall. Tickets priced at $140, $110 and $80 are now available at all URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).
