Do you know how to check your bicycle and protective gear before setting off? What about the safe way to ride on cycle tracks and on roads? Viewers watching the educational video "Safe Cycling: Rules and Tips" produced by the Transport Department (TD) will be able to find the answers.
Launched today (May 29), the full 14-minute video has been cut into six abridged versions which focus on specific topics entitled "Equipment", "Basic skills", "Practical matters: on cycle track", "Practical matters: on carriageway", "For motorists" and "For pedestrians" for different groups of road users. Viewers will find from the video the important riding rules, tips on selection and proper wearing of protective gear, and information on safety checks before setting off. The videos also provide tips on practical skills when riding on a cycle track and in traffic such as positioning, signalling, use of roundabouts, skills to handle gradients and avoid blind spots, and more. Useful tips for motorists and pedestrians on safe sharing of road use with cyclists have also been included in the videos.
The abridged versions are now available for viewing in TD Licensing Offices and on the TD website (www.td.gov.hk). The public may also view the videos via hyperlinks on the website of the Road Safety Council (www.roadsafety.gov.hk/eng/index.html) and on video sharing websites, at sports centres and on selected video walls of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department soon. To nurture young ones with the right thinking on cycling, copies of DVDs with the full version of the video will also be distributed to schools for educational purposes.
Whether one takes cycling as a leisure activity or as a means of transport for short trips in new towns, safety is of paramount importance. Cyclists, motorists and pedestrians should all be concerned about road safety and respect the rights of other road users. The video will certainly provide road users with noteworthy hints on safe cycling and help promote road safety in Hong Kong.
