The Development Bureau's Commissioner for Heritage's Office will begin a series of roving exhibitions in June to promote Hong Kong's most important historical landmarks and heritage sites. Entitled Heritage Discovery 2012, the exhibitions will run until October.
"The cultural tradition of a city often speaks volumes for the city itself. The city of Hong Kong stands as a living, breathing testament to its unique blend of Chinese and Western cultures as well as to its own distinctive character. As Hong Kong continues to grow as a modern city noted for its role as a financial hub and shopping paradise, visitors from abroad and Hong Kong's own residents are both increasingly fascinated by the city's cultural heritage and historical significance," a spokesman for the Development Bureau said today (May 28).
Starting June 1, the roving exhibitions will allow visitors to take a peek at the past and re-discover Hong Kong's distinct identity. Hosted at various popular locations across the city, the exhibition will comprise three themes, each highlighting a special part of Hong Kong's history and built heritage.
The first theme will focus on Hollywood Road and its rich historical sites such as the former Central Magistracy, Victoria Prison, Central Police Station and Man Mo Temple. These historical landmarks reflect Hong Kong's dynamic past when Western and Chinese institutions thrived in close proximity to each other.
The second theme will focus on Wun Yiu, the only known site in Hong Kong producing iconic blue-and-white porcelain. The exhibition will give visitors a close look at the archaeological remains of the Wun Yiu Kiln site as well as a glimpse into Hong Kong's historical heritage from the 16th century. The Wun Yiu exhibition reflects the pre-colonial history of Hong Kong that helped shape the city into what it is today.
The third and final theme will be the "Hong Kong Heritage Tourism Expo - Access Heritage" exhibition. With the support of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, the Hong Kong Heritage Tourism Expo will enable visitors to take a "virtual" tour of some of Hong Kong's many historical sites. The Expo will display models of historical buildings and monuments as well as encourage visitors to take special walking tours around places like Central, Tsim Sha Tsui, Wan Chai and Yau Ma Tei to see the heritage sites in person.
