Choreographer Dam Van Huynh's latest dance work "Mooring" will be staged in Hong Kong in June. Dam, who has been the audience choice winner in the Place Prize, Europe's largest choreography competition, will explore the athleticism and sensuality of dancers in the production and bring about thinking on the way forward for Asian culture.
Produced by Unlock Dancing Plaza, "Mooring" is the follow-up to "Black Square", which premiered in April 2011 at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts£¨HKAPA). The new dance work will continue to bring out the upcoming challenges for Asian culture: How to avoid falling into the trap of matching the fanciful expectations of the West? And what does it mean to be Asian in the contemporary world?
The inspiration and story for the work come from within the artists themselves, and their encounters, unlocked bodies and unbridled energy will together bring a new sensation to this evolving city. The dancers entering the creative space will bring with them both the conscious and unconscious evidence of their traditions and lineage as they move through the space.
Born in Southern Vietnam, Dam was raised and educated in the US. In 2008 he founded Van Huynh Company, which focuses on the exploration of the human body and its relationship through time and space. Dam's choreography is grounded in reality and digs further to access a deeper layer of conscience to create a sense of surrealism in dance. Dam was appointed as Artist-in-Residence at the HKAPA in 2010 and has created two new major works, "Black Square" and "Unexpectedly Here", since then.
