Those who are not able to join the Bun Scrambling Competition but wish to climb on the bun tower will have the chance to give it a try this Sunday (April 22).
The Climbing Carnival, one of the highlights of 2012 Bun Carnival, will be held at the soccer pitch of Pak Tai Temple Playground, Cheung Chau, from noon to 6pm this Sunday. Simply by making on-site applications, participants (at least 1 metre tall) can climb the 14-metre-tall bun tower set up for the Bun Scrambling Competition and experience the fun of climbing and the local tradition of the Cheung Chau Jiao Festival.
Invitation relays will also be staged. Eight teams from local tertiary institutions, government departments and public utilities as well as commercial and industrial organisations will compete in the relays. The fastest teams finishing the race will be the winners.
Besides the opportunity to experience climbing and the invitation relays, members of the China Hong Kong Mountaineering and Climbing Union will give demonstrations on climbing skills. Visitors can learn more about the technical and safety aspects of bun tower climbing and at the same time have fun at the carnival.
The plaque of the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage presented to the Hong Kong Cheung Chau Bun Festival Committee by the Chinese Ministry of Culture in 2011 will be exhibited at the venue. By visiting the exhibition booths and game stalls showcasing the theme of the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, the public can learn more about the past and present of the Bun Scrambling Competition, and recapture the delight of playing traditional folk games.
To further enliven the event, there will be activities ranging from handicrafts and lion dances to variety shows, as well as displays of winning works from the student colouring and drawing competitions. Members of the public can also make wishes on the "wishing bun tower" erected at the venue and even have a chance to get souvenirs featuring the buns.
