Chief Executive-elect sums up Beijing visit (with photos/video)

     The Chief Executive-elect, Mr C Y Leung, today (April 11) said he would strive to unite people from various sectors and strata of society, and make every effort to ensure a corruption-free society to build a better future for Hong Kong.

     After arriving in Beijing in the evening of the day before yesterday (April 9), the Chief Executive-elect received from Premier Wen Jiabao the instrument of appointment as the Fourth Term Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region at Zhongnanhai the next afternoon.

     In the afternoon today, Mr Leung met President Hu Jintao at Zhongnanhai.

     "I thank the state leaders for their congratulations and encouragement. I shall endeavour to do my utmost to unite people from various sectors, trades and businesses, as well as strata of society and lead my governing team to work together for a better Hong Kong. I shall not fail the support, trust and expectations of the Central Government and the Hong Kong people," Mr Leung said as he summed up his Beijing trip.

     "There will be both opportunities and challenges for Hong Kong in the next five years. I shall work together with the whole community to make the best use of the opportunities and the relatively rapid and sustainable economic developments to rise to the challenges and address the deep-rooted conflicts which have been existing in the Hong Kong society for a period of time," he said.

     The Chief Executive-elect also stressed that he and his governing team will be committed to preserving a corruption-free society, which is one of the core values dearly cherished in Hong Kong.

     While in Beijing, Mr Leung also called on the Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, Mr Wang Guangya. In the evening today, he visited the Office of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in Beijing (Beijing Office) to meet its director and staff members to understand their work. Mr Leung also attended a gathering hosted by the Beijing Office to talk with Hong Kong people who work and do business in Beijing to keep abreast of their career development, and living and working situation there.

     The Chief Executive-elect will conclude his Beijing visit and return to Hong Kong tomorrow morning.
