The Hong Kong Observatory headquarters was open to the public yesterday (March 24) and today (March 25). More than 10,000 people were attracted to join the event.
The Observatory organises an Open Day in March every year to celebrate the World Meteorological Day (http://www.wmo.int/worldmetday/) which falls on March 23. This year, the theme of the Open Day was "Powering our Future with Weather, Climate and Water". Through words, pictures and exhibits, the Observatory introduced various services including weather, climate, aviation meteorology, geophysical science and radiation monitoring to the public. State-of-the-art equipment was displayed, game booths, guided eco-tour and photo backdrop for posing as a member of Weather Family were also set up for the public.
The Open Day was welcome by the participants. Many visitors said the Observatory staff was friendly and helpful, and that they had their knowledge enriched from the well-presented exhibits and interesting games.
The Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, Mr Shun Chi-ming, hosted an autographing session during the Open Day. Many people posed for a picture with him.
Apart from the Observatory staff, more than sixty members of "Friends of the Observatory" volunteered to man the Open Day and enjoyed a happy weekend with the visitors.
