The 2012 Community Cultural Ambassador Scheme, presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), was launched today (February 25) at the Plaza of Shatin Town Hall.
Officiating at the launch ceremony were the Assistant Director (Performing Arts) of Leisure and Cultural Services, Ms Winsome Chow, and Art Form Panel (Community) members Dr Joshua Chan, Mr Chan Hei-hing and Ms Ribble Chung. The launch ceremony was followed by a session comprising an introduction to the 22 Community Cultural Ambassadors' projects and performance demonstrations for some of the projects.
The 22 Community Cultural Ambassadors this year are Unlock Dancing Plaza, DanceArt Hong Kong, Y-Space, Lau Tin-ming/Lee Chi-wai/Ho Tak-ching, Kim Sum Cantonese Opera Association, Wong Siu-sang, Hong Kong Youth of Chinese Opera College, Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble, Saturday Night Jazz Orchestra, Ng Cheuk-yin, Hua Xia Chinese Music Association, Centre for Community Cultural Development, Prospects Theatre, Ming Ri Institute for Arts Education, Alice Theatre Laboratory, Theatre Space, Actors' Family, Drama Gallery, Class 7A Drama Group, Theatre Ronin, Asian People's Theatre Festival Society and the Nonsensemakers.
Around 600 programmes will be presented in the scheme this year. The programmes cover music, dance, Chinese opera and theatrical arts. While most of the programmes will be free of charge, reasonable fees will be charged for serial workshops, training classes and some finale performances. The LCSD is dedicated to promoting arts, making them a part of everyday life for the people of Hong Kong. The Community Cultural Ambassador Scheme was launched in 1999. Every year, local performing arts practitioners and groups are invited through an open invitation exercise to act as Community Cultural Ambassadors to conduct a wide range of outreach activities that are both educational and fun at various indoor and outdoor venues as well as public spaces in the community. Activities include workshops, lecture demonstrations, exhibitions and performances. The aim is to develop an interest in the performing arts among the general public or specific community groups, enrich artistic experience and appreciation and promote the development of community arts. Also, it encourages local performing arts practitioners and groups to make contact with the community so as to widen their audience base and further develop their creative skills and talents. More than 81 arts practitioners and groups have been selected as Community Cultural Ambassadors since the scheme was launched.
