FarmFest 2012, the largest outdoor farmers' market in Hong Kong, opened today (December 30) at Fa Hui Park in Mong Kok. Over 300 stalls are showcasing a wide variety of local agricultural and fishery products at the four-day carnival. Local organic sweet potato, organic Chinese cabbage and organic fish are this year's theme produce.
The event has been jointly organised by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, Vegetable Marketing Organisation, Fish Marketing Organisation and the Organising Committee of FarmFest 2012. First held in 2007, FarmFest has attracted more than 100,000 visitors each year. Last year the number of visitors hit a record high of more than 190,000.
More than 180 booths will sell premium local produce, including fresh organic fruit and vegetables, chilled fish, dried seafood, and ornamental plants. Local delicacies, kitchenware, household goods as well as eco-friendly products will also be available.
Local organic sweet potato, organic Chinese cabbage and organic fish have been chosen this year's theme produce. A sweet potato kiosk showing different varieties of sweet potatoes and an outdoor field of fresh organic vegetables and herbs will give visitors a taste of the city's natural farming produce. Additionally, a simulated fish pond will give visitors an opportunity to learn more about organic aquaculture.
Against the backdrop of the organic crop field and fish pond, an imitation old Hong Kong streetscape lined with traditional shops selling local delicacies will create a nostalgic ambience.
Along with various fringe activities such as cultural performances, talks and cooking demonstrations, FarmFest 2012 is for the enjoyment of visitors of all ages.
Admission is free. There will be a free shuttle bus service every 15 minutes from Shek Kip Mei MTR Station exit B1.
