The Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra will perform a variety of classical music and music from animations and movies in February, featuring National First Class conductor Fan Tao and piano soloist Xie Yaou.
The concert will include a selection of well known pieces, such as Mozart's "Piano Concerto No. 18 in B-flat" and music from movies and animations including "Kiki's Delivery Service", "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind", "Kikujiro", "Grave of the Fireflies", "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea" and "My Neighbour Totoro". Video clips will also be screened during the performance to give audiences an entertaining audio-visual experience.
Guest conductor Fan Tao studied under the renowned conductors Huang Xiaotong and Philip Spurgeon. Fan has been the principal conductor for the Film Symphony Orchestra of the China Broadcasting Performing-Arts Troupe since 1995. He was awarded a special prize at the International Sibelius Conductors' Competition held in Finland in 2000. Orchestras and ensembles conducted by Fan include the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Sibelius Academy Symphony Orchestra, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and the National Ballet of China.
Pianist Xie Yaou studied under numerous teachers including Wan Ing Ong (Stuttgart), Hans Leygraf (Berlin), Pierre-Laurent Aimard (Paris) and Zhao Pingguo (Beijing). She has performed before international audiences at the Berliner Philharmonie, Konzerthaus Berlin, Cit de la Musique and Salle Cortot in Paris, Beijing Concert Hall, Shanghai Concert Hall and the Vienna Konzerthaus. Xie has won prizes at the Orlans Concours XXme Sicle, Concours Olivier Messiaen and the International Piano Competition Lake Como, and has received accolades for her interpretations of works by Franz Liszt, Claude Debussy, Arnold Schönberg, George Crumb, and Luciano Berio.
Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, "Music that Transcends Time and Space" by the Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra will take place at 8pm on February 4 (Saturday), at the Auditorium, Sha Tin Town Hall; and 3pm on February 5 (Sunday), at the Auditorium, Yuen Long Theatre. Tickets priced from $80 to $160 are now available at all URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and the minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).
