In celebration of the 62nd anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC), the Tsuen Wan Preparatory Committee of National Day Celebration, Tsuen Wan District Office and Tsuen Wan School Development Section of the Education Bureau co-organised the "Tsuen Wan District Secondary Schools and Uniformed Groups Flag Raising Ceremony cum Parade" at Tsuen Wan Sha Tsui Road Playground today (October 1).

Over 500 secondary school students and representatives from uniformed groups in the district participated in the event, the ceremonial parade of which was inspected by the Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Mr Raymond Tam.

A solemn flag raising ceremony commenced at 10am, with music performed by the marching band of the Civil Aid Service and the National Anthem, led by students of the Yan Chai Hospital Lim Por Yen Secondary School and Holy Cross Lutheran School. The grand ceremonial parade, inspected by Mr Tam, was conducted by a marching band, 16 parade teams composed of students from secondary schools and uniformed groups in Tsuen Wan.

In his speech, Mr Tam said that as today was the 62nd anniversary of the founding of the PRC and this year was the centenary of the 1911 Revolution, it was encouraging to witness the parade teams participating whole-heartedly in the flag raising ceremony. Quoting remarks by Dr Sun Yat-sen and Premier Wen Jiabao, he encouraged today's youths to study hard and equip themselves well so as to become socially responsible Chinese citizens in future.

He added that this year also marked the 50th anniversary of Tsuen Wan New Town. He said that Tsuen Wan had successfully transformed from a village to a harmonious community of some 300 000 residents, something that could not have been achieved without the concerted efforts and collaboration of various sectors in the district. The energetic youths involved in today's parade also represented a force for the sustainable development of Tsuen Wan in future.

Apart from the flag raising ceremony, a family carnival was held at the Princess Alexandra Community Centre for Tsuen Wan residents to enhance family harmony amid the festive atmosphere of National Day.
