The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

The Legislative Council (LegCo) Panel on Food Safety and Environmental Hygiene concluded its six-day duty visit to Japan in response to an invitation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan today (September 30).

The Chairman of the Panel on Food Safety and Environmental Hygiene, Mr Tommy Cheung, described the duty visit as very useful in enabling members to better understand the up-to-date situation in Japan following its earthquake in March this year and the sanitation inspection procedures for fresh food for local consumption and export.

Mr Cheung said that the visit was also fruitful for members to exchange views with the relevant government officials and representatives of relevant organisations on food safety measures taken in response to the Daiichi nuclear power plant incident, including the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the Food Safety Commission, the Kumamoto Prefectural Government and the Miyazaki Prefectural Government.

The delegation comprises three members, including Chairman of the panel, Mr Cheung, Members of the panel, Mr Fred Li and Mr Wong Yuk-man.
