Man arrested in connection with attacks on HKEx website

     Police yesterday (August 18) arrested a 29-year-old man in connection with the attacks on the news website of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEx).

     Police received a report on August 10 that the news website of HKEx was subject to cyber attack.  

     Officers of Technology Crime Division of Commercial Crime Bureau conducted in-depth investigations and arrested the 29-year-old man in Kwun Tong yesterday. Seventeen sets of computer, two mobile phones and five digital storage devices were seized.
 
     The man was arrested for 'Access to Computer with Dishonest or Criminal Intent' and will be detained overnight for further enquiries. Forensic examination will be conducted on the seized equipments.

     Police remind the public to use Internet in a lawful and responsible manner.  Most of the laws of Hong Kong are applicable to the virtual world. Police reiterate that 'Access to Computer with Dishonest or Criminal Intent' is a serious crime. Offenders are liable to a penalty of 5-year imprisonment.

     Police also appeal to the public and heads of corporations to do their best in enhancing the robustness of their IT systems by taking appropriate preventive security measures. When encountering cyber attack, they can make report to Police. Besides, they can also consider requesting additional services, such as extra bandwidth, source filtering etc, from the respective Internet Service Providers so as to minimize the overall impact on their system¡¯s service.
