Suspected food poisoning cases under investigation
**************************************************

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (July 27) investigating two suspected food poisoning outbreaks involving four persons who had eaten mushrooms.

The first case involved two women aged 44 and 55. They developed abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhoea about two hours after eating mushrooms at home on July 23. They bought the mushrooms from a department store in Causeway Bay. They sought medical treatment the same day. Both of them required hospitalisation and have been discharged.

The second case involved a 56-year-old woman and a 64-year-old man who developed the same symptoms about three hours after consuming mushrooms at home on July 26. The mushrooms were bought from the same department store. They sought medical attention the same day. One of them required hospitalisation and has been discharged.

All the affected are in stable condition. The investigation continues.

"Mushroom toxin poisonings are generally acute. The main treatment for this kind of poisoning is only supportive treatment," a CHP spokesman said.
