Police will conduct a territory-wide campaign from tomorrow (July 11) to July 17 to promote safe cycling in the summertime, and stringent enforcement action will also be taken against cycling offenders during the week.
Police figures show that there were 829 traffic accidents involving bicycles, resulting in 779 cyclist casualties during the first five months in 2011. The figures represent an increase of 10 per cent and 12 per cent respectively when compared with the same period last year. Among these casualties, six died - the same as the equivalent period last year.
A police spokesman said, "Once on the road, cyclists are subject to the Road Traffic Ordinance and are obliged to obey all traffic laws which apply to drivers. They should take care of other road users."
Common cycling offences include carrying another person, carrying any animal or article which obstructs the cyclist¡¯s view, riding a bicycle on the pavement, and riding without illuminating necessary lights.
