Members of the public enjoyed climbing the bun tower frame at the Climbing Carnival of the 2011 Bun Carnival on Cheung Chau today (May 1) and experienced the local traditions with family and friends.
After making on-site applications, participants in the carnival climbed the 14-metre-tall bun tower frame set up for the Bun Scrambling Competition to be held in the evening of May 10. They also made wishes on the "wishing bun tower" and looked forward to their wishes coming true.
The Climbing Carnival was held on the soccer pitch, Pak Tai Temple Playground, Cheung Chau. Officiating at the opening ceremony were the Chairman and Vice-Chairman of Hong Kong Cheung Chau Bun Festival Committee, Mr Yung Chi-ming and Mr Eric Ho; Chief Leisure Manager (New Territories West) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), Miss Sylvia Tang; Assistant District Officer (Islands), Mr Wong Chun-to; the Director of Hong Kong Cheung Chau Bun Festival Committee, Mr To Kwong-biu; the President of Cheung Chau Wai Chiu County Association Limited cum Hong Kong Cheung Chau Bun Festival Committee, Mr Chan Man-kwong; member of the Islands District Council, Ms Lee Kwai-chun; Divisional Commander (Cheung Chau) of the Hong Kong Police Force, Mr Mak Pui-yuen; First Vice-President of Hong Kong Mountaineering Union, Mr Henry Yu; and Executive Director of Luk Fook Group, Miss Nancy Wong.
During the Carnival, eight teams from local tertiary institution, government departments and commercial organisations competed in the invitation relays. The championship went to the team from the Fire Services Department.
Festival-goers had fun by the games stalls featuring the bun festival, climbing as a sport and the third Hong Kong Games, handicrafts and variety shows, together with the demonstrations on bun tower climbing and relevant safety measures performed by the Hong Kong Mountaineering Union.
A total of 12 finalists comprising nine men and three women will compete against each other for individual awards in the Bun Scrambling Competition, the finale of 2011 Bun Carnival, to be held from 11.30pm on May 10 to 12.30am on May 11 on the soccer pitch, Pak Tai Temple Playground, Cheung Chau.
The 2011 Bun Carnival is jointly organised by the Hong Kong Cheung Chau Bun Festival Committee and the LCSD between April 23 and May 11, with the support of the Cheung Chau Wai Chiu County Association Limited, the Cheung Chau Rural Committee, the Islands District Office and the Hong Kong Mountaineering Union, and is sponsored by Luk Fook Jewellery, Watsons Water and the Islands District Council.
