The Secretary for the Civil Service, Miss Denise Yue, visited Eastern District this afternoon (April 20) to learn more about educational and social services in the local community.
Accompanied by the District Officer (Eastern), Mr Davis Hui, Miss Yue first visited the Wesley College in Siu Sai Wan. She was glad to hear that the co-educational secondary school, established in 1977, offers whole-life and balanced education to about 1,000 students.
During her tour of the school, Miss Yue observed a Form Five class of some 30 students attending a liberal studies lesson. She also took the opportunity to talk to teachers and student representatives on their experiences in teaching and studying liberal studies.
Miss Yue then departed for the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals' (TWGHs) Fong Shu Chuen Social Service Building in Shau Kei Wan, which has been offering integrated services to the community via different centres in the nine-storey building since 1999.
Miss Yue first called at the building's TWGH CROSS Centre to gain a better understanding of its work in counselling drug abusers and promoting drug-free education in the community.
She also visited the Fong Shu Chuen Care and Attention Home, on the second to fifth floors of the building, and was pleased to see the wide-range of services being offered to residents, including healthcare, rehabilitation, hostel, counselling and recreational services.
Miss Yue then proceeded to the District Elderly Community Centre on the first floor which, based on the needs of the elderly in the district, provides a comprehensive package of community support services including sustained learning activities, volunteer development, dissemination of information on community resources, healthy aging activities and a counselling service.
The Centre is equipped with televisions, physical fitness equipment and a resource corner providing books, newspapers, magazines, videos and computers connected to the Internet. Some 270 elderly visit the Centre every day and enjoy its services.
Miss Yue also chatted with some elderly residents to better understand their experiences of using the Centre's services.
Before concluding her visit, Miss Yue met some Eastern District Council members to exchange views on various district issues.
