The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

In response to the recent influenza situation in Hong Kong, the Hospital Authority (HA), in close collaboration with the Centre for Health Protection, has activated the enhanced monitoring system for severe influenza patients staying in the intensive care units of public hospitals.  The HA spokesman today (February 14) announced that there were 12 newly confirmed Human Swine Influenza (HSI) cases who are being treated in intensive care units in the past three days.   Details of the cases are listed in the attached table.

Furthermore, a 61-year-old male patient with a history of chronic disease and experiencing flu-like symptoms was admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital on February 11 (Friday).  He succumbed the following day (February 12) due to continued deterioration of clinical condition.  Test results of the patient proved positive to HSI.  The hospital would like to express their deep condolences to the patient's family.

As at 2pm today, there were a total of 37 influenza patients staying at the intensive care unit of public hospitals, including the above 12 newly confirmed HSI cases.
