Tuen Mun Hospital awarded full accreditation on healthcare standards (with photo)

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) today (December 17) announced that the hospital has been awarded full accreditation status for four years by the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS).

     The ACHS conducted the Organisation Wide Survey (OWS) in TMH from September 13 to 17, 2010.  The hospital was granted four-year full accreditation status by ACHS in late November.  The hospital attained Extensive Achievements in thirteen out of the forty-five criteria under Clinical, Support and Corporate functions, namely:

1. Care is evaluated by health care providers and when appropriate with the consumer / patient and carer;
2. Systems exist to ensure that the care of dying and deceased consumers / patients is managed with dignity and comfort;
3. The community has information on, and access to, health services and care appropriate to its need;
4. Access and admission to the system of care is prioritised according to clinical need;
5. Medications are managed to ensure safe and effective practice;
6. The organisation's continuous quality improvement system demonstrates its commitment to improving the outcomes of care and service delivery;
7. Health care incidents, complaints and feedback are managed to ensure improvements to the systems of care;
8. The learning and development system ensures the skill and competence of staff and volunteers;
9. Better health and wellbeing for consumers / patients, staff and the broader community are promoted by the organisation;
10. External service providers are managed to maximise quality care and service delivery;
11. Safety management systems ensure safety and wellbeing for consumers / patients, staff, visitors and contractors;
12. Waste and environmental management supports safe practice and a safe environment;
13. Security management supports safe practice and a safe environment.

     A certificate presentation ceremony was held in TMH yesterday (December 16). The Vice President of the ACHS Board of Directors, Professor Karen Linegar, attended the ceremony to present the accreditation certificate to TMH and congratulated the hospital on its success. Staff members from various disciplines shared their experience in preparing for the OWS. The Hospital Chief Executive of TMH, Dr Albert LO Chi-yuen, expressed his whole-hearted gratitude to over 4,000 staff members for their support and contribution.

     "I believe the hospital accreditation exercise is the largest team project since the establishment of the TMH in 1990. It is truly a team work involving all departments and disciplines. The success of the exercise reveals our seamless cooperation and team spirit. Our core values ¡ª 'Kaizen (continuous improvement)' and 'People First Culture' - steer us in pursuing service excellence and lead us to attain recognition in the Clinical, Support and Corporate functions. I also thank the Hospital Authority Head Office and our colleagues for their support in actualising our vision of continuous quality improvement and service modernisation."

     "TMH is having her 20th anniversary this year. The fruitful achievement in the hospital accreditation exercise is the best gift ever to commemorate our hospital's birthday. To echo our 20th anniversary couplet ¡ª 'We care and we can, for twenty years and more', all members of TMH will continue to work hand in hand to provide quality patient care to residents in the New Territories West region."
