Key statistics on operating characteristics of the import/export, wholesale and retail trades, and accommodation and food services sectors in 2009

     According to the results of the 2009 Annual Survey of Economic Activities - Import/Export, Wholesale and Retail Trades, and Accommodation and Food Services Sectors released today (December 9) by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD), total receipts (comprising sales and other receipts) of the import/export, wholesale and retail trades, and accommodation and food services sectors amounted to $3,505.4 billion in 2009, representing a decrease of 6.2% compared with 2008; on a per establishment basis, total receipts decreased by 10.1% compared with 2008 to $21.6 million in 2009.

     Operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees of the sectors altogether amounted to $3,271.3 billion in 2009, representing a decrease of 5.3% compared with 2008; on a per establishment basis, they decreased by 9.2% compared with 2008 to $20.2 million in 2009.

     Gross surplus of the sectors, which is equal to total receipts less operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees, decreased by 17.2% compared with 2008 to $234.0 billion in 2009; on a per establishment basis, gross surplus decreased from $1.8 million in 2008 to $1.4 million in 2009.  Gross surplus accounted for 6.7% of total receipts in 2009, down by 0.9 percentage point compared with 2008.

     Value added of the sectors, which is a measure of their contribution to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product, decreased by 7.9% compared with 2008 to $427.4 billion in 2009; on a per establishment basis, the value added was $2.6 million in 2009, which decreased by 11.7% compared with 2008.

     According to the survey results, it was estimated that the afore-mentioned sectors comprised some 162 100 establishments and engaged about 1 034 700 persons, or an average of 6.4 persons per establishment, in 2009.

     In the import/export trade, total receipts amounted to $2,878.4 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $2,689.8 billion in 2009.  Gross surplus decreased from $233.7 billion in 2008 to $188.6 billion in 2009, accounting for 6.6% of total receipts in 2009.  Value added decreased by 9.3% compared with 2008 to $315.7 billion.

     In the wholesale trade, total receipts amounted to $197.8 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $191.7 billion in 2009.  Gross surplus decreased from $7.7 billion in 2008 to $6.2 billion in 2009, accounting for 3.1% of total receipts in 2009.  Value added decreased by 8.0% compared with 2008 to $14.3 billion.

     In the retail trade, total receipts amounted to $310.7 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $286.2 billion in 2009.  Gross surplus increased from $22.6 billion in 2008 to $24.5 billion in 2009, accounting for 7.9% of total receipts in 2009.  Value added increased by 3.5% over 2008 to $49.9 billion.

     In the accommodation sector which covered hotels, guesthouses, boarding houses and other establishments providing short term accommodation, total receipts amounted to $23.6 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $16.4 billion in 2009.  Gross surplus decreased from $10.2 billion in 2008 to $7.3 billion in 2009, accounting for 30.8% of total receipts in 2009.  Value added decreased significantly by 19.6% compared with 2008 to $14.6 billion.

     In the food services sector which mainly covered restaurants, total receipts amounted to $94.8 billion while operating expenses, cost of goods sold and compensation of employees totalled $87.4 billion in 2009.  Gross surplus decreased from $8.4 billion in 2008 to $7.4 billion in 2009, accounting for 7.9% of total receipts in 2009.  Value added decreased by 4.0% compared with 2008 to $32.9 billion.

     The classification of industries follows the Hong Kong Standard Industrial Classification (HSIC), which is used in various economic surveys for classifying economic units into different industry classes.  Upon the implementation of the HSIC Version 2.0 by the C&SD in October 2008, the new classification has been adopted in compiling statistics on the business performance and operating characteristics of various sectors starting from the reference year of 2009.  The series of the statistics on the business performance and operating characteristics of various sectors under the HSIC Version 2.0 has also been backcasted to the reference year of 2005 to facilitate comparison.
